Abstract
Fracture mechanics and limit load calculations are used to predict the strength of bonded joints under tensile shear loading. This approach shows that different fracture modes can occur depending on geometrical and fracture parameters of the joint and the adherends. These results are firstly established for a double lap shear specimen and are generalized for stepped lap joints in order to study the repair of several composite materials. The main advantage of this method is that the mechanical behavior of bonded joints is described by the flow stress and by the critical strain energy release rate, two parameters which can be determined by simple experiments.
