Requirements for the manufacture of pressure vessels for wet H₂S service

Abstract

Special design and manufacturing requirements for resistance to H₂S corrosion are required for pressure vessels to be used in H₂S-bearing hydrocarbon services. Generally, the vessels are made of non-alloyed carbon steel and operate at temperature ranging between the ambient temperature and 150 °C.

The NACE standard MR 01-75, which is known worlwide, is the reference document in terms of materials and fabrication requirements for H₂S service. It does not, however, provide all the answers to many questions relative to material selection and its utilization. H₂S operating conditions have been redefined, based on the actual severity (corrosion fluid and service). Curves have been drawn to define degrees of severity and corresponding metallurgical requirements have been defined.
