Abstract
An account is given of the experience gained in collecting and structuring corrosion knowledge for a computer based expert system able to give design consultation on the corrosion aspects of marine installations. As an aid to building the system, the character of corrosion knowledge and the behaviour of a human consultant were analysed. The importance of providing a dialogue that is friendly to the user is emphasized. Systematic listings are given of the various factors that need to be defined by the questions and responses of the dialogue, in order to specify a corrosion situation completely. The suitability of various types of literature source is considered; and the means adopted for summarizing and storing the resulting knowledge, and for presenting it to the user, are described. Aspects of the system requiring further development are identified, and possible solutions are outlined.
