Abstract

This paper deals with the transposition of dynamic tests methods from metal and metallic alloys studies to polymeric systems and composites’ones, in view of their rheological investigation at impact rate loadings.

Based on mechanical configurations of the laboratory on one hand and on results of the authors themselves - or of the open litterature - on the other hand, the article sets out a critical and comparative analysis between real conditions of shock loadings and experimental techniques involving high strain rates.

In particular, the dynamic flexural test (dynamic toughness, crack propagation), ball bouncing experiments (resilience) and Hopkinson bars devices are discussed.

This discussion includes some illustrating examples covering a rather large spectrum of materials used for engineering applications.
