Représentation 2D de : a) une structure cristalline constituée d’atome de Si (cercle noir) et d’oxygène (cercle blanc), on constate un motif géométrique (hexagone) et une périodicité alors que dans la figure b) des arrangements atomiques sont présents (anneaux à 3, 4, 5, 6 tétraèdres) mais ces arrangements ne sont pas réguliers ni périodiques (d’après Zachariasen [6]). Notons que les deux structures ont le même nombre d’atome de Si, mais n’occupent pas la même surface en raison d’une densité plus faible pour le verre que pour le cristal.
