Abstract
This paper deals with the influence of surface preparation (especially with surface roughness) of the adherends, on the fine mechanical behaviour of the stepped single-lap joint subjected to an uniaxial tensile load. Various surface treatments are carried out onto the metallic adherends with a reproducible-condition procedure.
Damage regions in the joint such as global elastic range, microcrack start, growth of microcracks in a steady manner or their propagation up to failure are determined by experimental methods based on strain gauge measurements and acoustic emission.
The agreement between experimental results and theoretical strain field solutions is discussed.
