Abstract
To improve the wear resistance of the Inconel alloy (625) in sea water conditions, authors have studied different carbides-metallic structures obtained with small particles (TiC or WC-Ni, WC-Co) mixed with the same matrix powder (625) and sintered by HIP.
These different MMC have been characterized by electrochemical measures in natural sea water and then by friction tests in sea water against alumina counterfaces.
The results obtained show that the friction coefficients remain high in all the situations, but an improving effect is observed for these materials, concerning a wearing reduction effect.
A good correlation has been obtained between the evolution of the electrochemical potential during friction and the friction coefficient. At the same time, the structural observations of the surfaces, after friction, show the role played by the carbide particles, which has been clearly defined in the tribological contact.
