Abstract
This paper discusses some of the main models proposed in the literature for determining the hardness of films that are too thin to be directly measured from Vickers microhardness indentations. Two type of models were examined : the “area low - of - mixtures” from Jönsson and Hogmark and the volume low - of - mixture initially suggested by Sargent and developped by Burnett and Rickerby. Results obtainend by this models are discussed and critically examined. Some modifications were proposed to improve the validity of these models.
