Résumé

Il y a 100 ans l'aluminium, grâce à la découverte du procédé d'électrolyse, passait du stade de coûteuse curiosité de laboratoire à celui de produit industriel.

En même temps, de l'imagination de quelques aventuriers de la technique et du besoin de liberté, naissait l'automobile, qui devait changer la face du monde.

La rencontre de ces deux produits dans l'enfance était inévitable. Dès 1895, la première pièce moulée faisait son apparition sur le tricycle de Dion-Bouton et en 1899, la Latil présentait déjà les dispositions principales des véhicules les plus modernes : traction avant, moteur transversal... et un carter de boîte de vitesses moulé en aluminium.

Depuis, les progrès de l'un ont entraîné les progrès de l'autre au point que pendant longtemps, aluminium était, pour le constructeur automobile comme pour l'utilisateur, synonyme de performance, au sens sportif du terme.

Abstract

First, a flashback... A hundred years ago with the discovery of the electrolytic process, aluminium moved up from being an expensive laboratory curiosity to become an industrial product.

At the same time, from the imagination of a handful of adventurous engineers and a yearning for freedom, sprang the motor car, which was to change the face of the world.

The encounter of these two products in their infancy was inevitable. As early as 1895 the first casting made its appearance on the De Dion-Bouton tricycle, and in 1899 the Latil already boasted the main features of the most recent of today's vehicles : frontwheel drive, transverse engine mounting... and a cast aluminium gear casing.

Since then, the progress of both industries have kept pace to the extent that, for both the automobile manufacturer and the motorist, "aluminium" was long synonymous with "performance" in the sporting sense of the world.
