Abstract
The electrochemical behavior of three different anodic materials (Zinc, Al-Zn-In and Al-Mg alloys) is investigated when these alloys are connected to carbon steel, in CaCl2 brine at -5°C and 18°C. The amount of hydrogen evolution is determined through electrochemical measurements in order to estimates hazardous effects due to increasing concentration of hydrogen in confined gazeous phase, for various ratio between anode and steel surface.
The investigations are made in freshly polished samples as well as on anodic materials previously connected to steel and immersed for 24 hours in brine.
It appears that Al-Mg alloys should never be used as anodic materials, whatever the tested temperature of the brine. Commercial Al-Zn-In anode leads to interesting data for short time of immersion of new material, but for longer duration of galvanic coupling, pure zinc is certainly the safest choice.
