Abstract
Brushing is a very effective means of generating residual compressive stresses in the near surface layers of steel components. Depending on the characteristics to be obtained, selecting the proper set of processing parameters (wire length, wire diameter, brush diameter, brushing speed, ...) results either in shallow, high compressed layers or in deep, low compressed layers. In the first case, surface roughness is little affected, and brushing is similar to lapping. In the second case, brushing is to be compared to shot peening.
