Abstract
Al-baseci and Cu-based alloys are commonly used in industry, For example, the so-called "aluminium bronzes" Cu-Al alloys have been developed due to good m echanical properties couples with a high corrosion.
Al-based alloys, because of their low density, are also very attractive. However, their wear resistance remains rather poor which limits their field of applications.
High energy beam surface processing can improve the mechanical behavior, in particular the wear resistance, caused by a grain refinement after rapid solidification and possibly by inner precipitation of hardening elements or injection of foreign hard particles.
This paper deals with surface treatments using high energy beams such as those produced by a laser. It focuses on heat processing although laser shock surface treatment also appears to be a promising route for improving some mechanical properties.
No particular application has been featured. Single remelting, cladding, alloying... have all been discussed in the light of major works both academic and industrial.
