Abstract
The drawing of a metallic conductor (copper), an isolator (magnesia) and a metallic tube (copper) is one of the commonly used processes to produce electric cables with mineral isolation. Since the drawing is a cold-forming process, intermediate anneals are required before the final diameter is reached. In this paper, an upper-bound approach is used to analyze the cable drawing process, to evaluate the forming loads (stress and strain in conductor, magnesia and tube) during the process and to predict the optimum process conditions (optimal cone angle and reduction of diameter for a given friction condition). A modified fracture criterion according to the maximum tensile stress-strain energy is adopted to predict the workability of the drawing cables. The results of modelling are compared with cable production data.
