Getting acquainted with water

Abstract
The various phenomena linked to the basic equilibria of water with gases (oxygen, carbon dioxide) or ionic substances in solution are gradually explained. The acid-base equilibria of carbonates, together with the low solubility of calcium carbonate are described with their constants, and account for the ionic dissymmetry observed in the equilibrium diagram plotting [total carbon dioxide] against [calcium ions] after MM. Legrand and Poirier. The effect of temperature and ionic strength on constants or activity coefficients is summarized, as well as complex building and precipitation of calcium carbonate as calcite, aragonite or vaterite. Then, kinetic problems are tackled, with metallic wall importance and electrochemical phenomena (crystal germs, precipitating « in situ » or against a wall).
