Elements of science in adhesive bonding
Laboratoire Génie de Production, Equipe Génie des Matériaux, Ecole Nationale d’ingénieurs de Tarbes
Abstract
Adhesive bonding is an interdisciplinary field which needs a good knowledge in physics, chemistry and mechanics. Moroever surface science, from the physico-chemistry and topography points of view, is the meeting point between adhesive bonding and adhesion science.
Through the presentation of the main scientific topics encountered in adhesive bonding = surface energy, wetability, surface physico-chemistry, surface topography, the requirements for adhesive bonding are established.
Surface preparation and modification for reliability and performance of adhesive bonds are emphasized.
Finaly a short discussion on adhesion mechanisms shows how difficult a simple unified adhesion theory is to get.
