Abstract
Laser beams can be used to modify metallic surfaces in a variety of ways. They can beused for heat treatment or surface alloying when surface properties different from the bulk must be achieved. Laser alloying is the simultaneous melting of the base material and of the alloying element, allowing the base composition to be substantially alteredor modified. In this work, we have undertaken a study of the effects of laser surface boronizing on a lower grade metal, iron, to improve its high temperature oxidation resistance. A continuous wave laser (Nd- YAG) was used for this purpose.
